I have known my old weaving friend Karen for more than 10 years since when she was an English teacher at Soochow University.  After she retired, she returned to the USA to take care of her father. Then she came back to Taiwan to live permanently after her father passed away. She comes to Founder-Tek from time to time to choose yarns and see what I am doing. We always have happy "weaver's talk" to exchange ideas...etc. Thank you to Karen for sharing her weaving journey with us. She would love to meet weavers in Taiwan. If anyone would like to meet her, please contact us and we will be happy to forward your message to her.

FT20.jpg

FT15.jpg

Hi.  I’m Karen Cisney.  My weaving journey began in 2007.  I was bicycling in New Zealand and visited the Ashford Handicrafts showroom in Ashburton, South Island.  I went in intending to buy a spinning wheel and did, but much to my surprise, also came away with an Ashford Knitter’s Loom.  Right there in the showroom I began weaving.  It was magic to see cloth flow out of a few simple movements of my fingers.  I was hooked.  That blue scarf wasn’t pretty, but it was a beginning.

Several years before I bought the Knitter’s Loom, I had a copy of Deborah Chandler’s Learning to Weave.  I read and reread it and dreamed of weaving someday. And I wondered if it would ever happen.

At Chinese New Year 2010 I was in Eugene, Oregon, USA and decided to visit Eugene Textiles Center “just to see” what they had.  In a very short while, I found myself seated at a Schacht Baby Wolf loom. It was a big step up from the Knitter’s Loom, but with the owner, Suzie, at my elbow I wove a set of placemats in huck weave using 3/2 pearl cotton. Three different placements on one warp! That was also my first experience using a warping board and a bobbin winder.  Now my weaving world was expanding: more exciting tools and putting warp on a big loom.  The magic of weaving just expanded.  Now I had two looms: the Knitter’s loom and the Baby Wolf loom.

I had bought my first issue of Handwoven in 2006, looked at it and dreamed.  Now, I subscribed to the magazine and saw many weaving possibilities, some within reach and some far in the future: twill, double weave, overshot, deflected double weave, and more.  I wanted to weave them all and to understand just how threads interlaced on a loom to create those astounding patterns and colors.

One Handwoven issue was titled Winning Projects to learn by and I was ready for it.  Teach Yourself Twill seemed made for me: unbelievable that 6 different towels could be woven on one warp! I had to weave it to believe it.  And I did.  It was truly magic.

The interlacement of threads in twill with color-and-weave effects was the next adventure.  How could two sides of the same cloth look so different?  Again, I had to weave it to see.  One side was white, green and blue stripes.  Yet the other side was a complex zig zag pattern of the three colors.

Then came the challenge of Overshot and pearl cotton.  Using the Fiberworks PCW weaving program, I adapted the border of larger overshot runner and wove it in gold and raisin pearl cotton.  Many of my projects through the years have been woven using various sizes of pearl cotton.  The many beautiful colors and yarn sizes from 3/2 to 20/2 make it a perfect choice for table runners, scarves, shawls, place mats, and more.

While I was in Eugene, Oregon, one of the other weavers in the studio was weaving a wedding gift: a double weave blanket in wool.  Incredible! How could two layers be woven at one time and on one loom?  Finally it was time to try double weave.  Jennifer Moore’s book The Weaver’s Studio: Doubleweave was my guide this time.  I had so much (very focused) fun seeing two different colored, separate layers change places top to bottom, close at the sides and stuff the cloth with filler to make pouches, and also create two-colored leno weave.

Thank you for following my weaving journey so far.  If you are a weaver, you know there is more territory to explore.  If you would like some company on the adventure, I’d be happy to meet you. If you are not yet a weaver, Deland at Founder Tek weaving studio, is a wonderful, experienced and patient guide.  She led three friends and I through two days of learning to weave on the rigid heddle loom.  My friends were so happy and satisfied with their creations
